Assateague National Seashore and Chincoteague national wildlife refuge are both located on Assateague Island with its pristine Atlantic Coast beach. It’s one of the few spots on the Atlantic Coast which has been preserved in its natural undeveloped state. Surfing, swimming, sunbathing, and fishing are activities enjoyed here in the warm weather months. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge offers miles of nature trails for biking, hiking, and bird watching. With hundreds of species of wild animals, migratory birds and other wildlife live year round on Assateague Island. But the best known residents are the wild ponies which you may see on the nature trails or driving along beach road. The waterways around both islands offer excellent kayaking and boating.
The historic downtown offers a verity of specialty shops, galleries, restaurants and Robert Reed water Front Park is a popular spot for weddings and special events.

Thanks to NASA Chincoteague is becoming known for the go to destination for viewing rocket launches from Wallops Island. At least 8 missions will leave from the Mid Atlantic Regional Spaceport located at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia it’s all part of a contract between Orbital Sciences and NASA to deliver cargo to the international Space Station.
